At least 12 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire on Monday during Gaza border clashes, Gaza’s health ministry said, bringing the total number of Palestinian deaths to over 50 since the border protests began in late March.
The ministry also said that at least 500 people were wounded in Monday’s clashes, dozens of whom were hit by live fire.
Israel has said it would prevent a potential breach of the Gaza border at all costs. It has drawn international criticism for what rights groups say are unlawful open-fire rules. Israel says it has the right to defend its border.
Monday's protests also targeted the opening of the US Embassy in contested Jerusalem later in the day.
