LAHORE/KARACHI: Medical stores observed a strike in various areas of Lahore on Monday, to protest Punjab government’s amendments to the Drugs Act, 1976.
Stores outside Mayo and Sir Ganga Ram hospitals remained closed, as patients faced inconvenience in buying medicines.
Wholesale medicine market and distribution will remain closed today, said Wholesale Chemist Association president.
The amendments in the act have tightened the rules for medical stores. The law now requires medical stores across Punjab to employ a pharmacist.
Stores selling unregistered medicines will be sealed and charged a hefty penalty, as per an amendment in the Drug Act. Areas observing the strike include Changa Manga, Vehari, Pindi Bhattian, and Toba Tek Singh.
A protest has also been called in Karachi, and the chemist association is mulling over a strike.
